Memory 10
(VKM Chapter 26)
Things to Note:
- All names are intact!
- 'Yuuki' her real name is used here.
- This should only be from her point of view
- The chapter jumps around a little
- She did not see who is in the ice coffin
- The background information is bolded because it is not very clear in the scans what is going on, but she WOULD have this information inside her head, and so anyone who sees the memory is allowed to be in on the know as well.
The Chapter:
Hovering beside your eldest daughter's bed while seated on a chair, you watch over her as you have the last few days. The recent attack on your youngest daughter, only in high school still leaves you shaken. And this sleep-like coma that Ai has fallen into is a result of her injuries after protecting her younger sister. There are a million things you need to do about this situation and it's difficult to know where to start. You start going over what you know once more for the millionth time.
A manufactured and new species of 'vampire' has been created. And a mysterious shadow behind the scenes known as the 'Vampire King' is responsible for this. During the attack on your daughter, it took place during the soiree of pureblood acquaintance of yours. The vampires and humans alike working beneath the 'Vampire King' were determined to bury the vampires at this party underground. In addition to this, they collared innocent individuals to explosive devices in order to make it seem as though that acquaintance had something to do with their predicament. At this time, a mysterious bomb squad showed up to rescue the trapped individuals... but from your own informants, it is more likely that these people are also connected to the Vampire King. They were neither properly human nor vampire. Instead, it seems they have been blended together with the genetics of humans, vampires, and hunters. And these individuals, troubling enough, have been plastered all over the news and media as defenders of public safety.
It becomes even worse. Small villages and towns have been attacked and innocent humans slaughtered. And in each of these cases, it has been staged to appear as though the vampires are responsible for it. Even after your failed attempt to save a village the other day... you were forced to flee with the full knowledge that were you found there you would have been wrongly accused. The human government has steadily begun to frame the vampires and disregard the reports and information provided by the Vampire Hunter's Association. As a result, humans are receiving false reports and there has been increasing violence and tension against the vampire populace as a whole. The hatred and anger against them has become incredibly radicalized after the initial spread of public anxiety. And now... this organization has targetted Cross Academy, your father's legacy and what had been his deep desire for peace and coexistence between humans and vampires alike.
As a result of everything, known or suspected residences have been attacked by protestors. Even the Academy has dealt with many attempts. But fortunately, hostile entities are unable to harm anyone on the academy grounds, due to the protection of that person.
It all leads you back to this moment. Knowing that the protection squad is no more than a fabrication and the government... specifically a particular mayor is actually behind these attacks, you thought that maybe if you sired him and took on a villain role you'd be able to spare everyone else, but apparently that idea was shot down immediately. And with that, a male voice-- Kaname's voice lingers in your mind.
'Playing the villain doesn't suit you. There's always another way. That's what you would have said in the old days...'
Nng. This whole situation is one frustration after another and you're really struggling with what the right solution to it all might be though. With your daughter asleep, you find yourself talking aloud.
"Just for now, I'll listen to what you said."
You huff, leaning on the bed before tiredly flattening your face against the blankets.
"But if possible, I want you to tell me something about my impulsive wish to sacrifice my life for you." Your mind always seems to come back to it. One day you surely will, you think. But maybe now isn't the time. Glancing down at the bed you gaze at your beautiful daughter, still fast asleep.
"This child must think about the same things that I do too."
She's much too reckless, and that's the last thing you want for her. Still, you're fond as you lean forward and poke her cheek with a smile.
"She even pushed herself so far that she fell asleep. She sleeps a lot, just like you..."
For whatever the reason is, talking about your problems aloud has always helped you sort through your thoughts. So at last you push up from the bed.
"Now--" There's work to be done. "There are things I need to deal with," No matter how much you don't want to leave her side. "So I have to go. It would be great if I could handle everything before Ren gets back."
How long will they be gone for? No matter. Opening the door to leave, you're met by a young, blonde man.
"Yuuki-Obasan, I'll watch over Ai-chan."
"Is that okay?" It's a relief if he will. You absolutely hate leaving her alone like this and want someone familiar nearby if she wakes up. He nods his assent.
"Yes. I checked on my father and the laboratory and there is nothing to worry about."
Good. He moves on inside the room just as another calls for your attention. She's a thin, beautiful woman with silvery hair and eyes.
"Yuuki-sama. It's about Representative Kain and the special Council meeting."
Fortunately, you already know about this, so you nod over your shoulder.
"Representative Kain has already made all of the arrangements and told me everything that I need to know, so it's fine. Anyway, you should hurry and finish setting up."
You need a moment to clear your head, and thus, you decide to visit the ice coffin beneath the basement of the academy. What you don't expect to hear or see is a commotion. Least of all the discussion topic at hand. On the other side of an upturned table, a number of students protest against a tall blonde-- 'Grave-Keeper Ichijou-sama'. And what the students want, due to these uncertain times, is to die...
Stepping inside, you survey the scene and address your friend.
"Ichijou-san, these vampires, are they-"
"Sorry," He says apologetically, looking chagrined. "Some strange vampires just came here. I relied too much on Kaname's strength."
Watching the children, you approach and notice as they shudder, suddenly nervous and unsure. Crouching down beside them, your voice is gentle when you finally speak. To think that these young vampires would believe that their best option in these uncertain times is to die.
"I understand why you cling to the thought of dying." How many times have you thought of doing the same? For a long time now you've contemplated the fact that one day you hope to sacrifice your life. But your lifespan will be much longer than their own. And these children are the future. It saddens you to realize that things have come to such a state. Your voice is firm, and you address them all seriously.
"I have an idea. So please bear with me for a moment."
It's your responsibility to give these children... the rest of the vampire race, too, a safe place to live. Things can't go on the way that they have been. The clock can't be turned back, and at a time when you know there to be no hope of improvement due to how things have played out, big changes to ensure the well being and protection of everyone needs to be made.
That's why, at the council meeting with your fellow pureblood, the representatives of the vampire council as well as those in attendance for the vampire hunter's association, you finally addresses everyone with your thoughts.
"I think it's time for a strategic retreat."
Of course, that's when one of your number grins.
"Oh? Are we finally going to space?"
. . . That's not actually a terrible idea despite the fact that she is joking, you think. Even if Ichijou looks unsure. But no, it isn't what you had in mind. Not entirely.
"Until things have calmed down, we should close off the lands we live in now and stay within our borders. Or rather, we should isolate ourselves from the humans."
It's a drastic step but honestly speaking if they want to keep the vampires safe without resorting to violence against humans, than you don't see a different option right now.
"This could work if we freely use our secret scientific developments. And, if we are a little patient and cooperate. That way, we can wait until time presents us with a solution. What do you think?"
The one thing they all have is time. You're entirely serious and sincere as you look out at the small group before you in order to gauge their reaction to the idea. Before you turn to make eye contact with one in particular.
"I read something similar in one of your comics, Ichijou-san. It was very good."
This can definitely work.
Commentary:
- IS SHE AN AUNT?
- Has a feeling Kaname is in the ice coffin... bro why are you sleeping on ice...?
- Things just aren't looking that great in society right now...
Effects:
- Just trying to make sense of all this. She has knowledge of events but not full memories of all of them so it's a lot. Also having to make your race go into isolation isn't awesome either.
